I wouldnt do that. A voice cautioned amid the darkness.
Carly spun around quickly eyeing the speaker and shooting back bellicosely, You shouldnt sneak up on people in the dark.
Ned flashed a toothy grin. Ive been told I do some of my best work in the dark.
Frowning Carly rolled her eyes. I havent heard a line like that since I sat in the front seat of my friends El Camino while she went into the 7-11 and bought us both a slushee while a redneck tried to hit on me.
Im a bit out of practice. Ned admitted continuing to smile.
And married.
Were in the process of getting a divorce. Ned explained tersely. Thats not important though...you shouldnt do what youre thinking of.
You know what Im thinking about? Carly stated rhetorically. So what you became Harry Houndi overnight?
Houndi was an escape artist. Ned reminded her; using a droll, lazy tone that predictably only serve to infuriate Carly further.
Houndini, whoever. Carly spat out clearly frustrated. Dont pretend you know me or what I might be thinking.
Ned smiled as if taking her words as a bit of a challenge. I do know you. And judging from your angry hurried walk you are rushing to do something. And half this town knows when you rush into something it is nothing less than a disaster.
I wouldnt use the word disaster.
Of course you wouldnt. Ned agreed amiably. The rest of Port Charles would. But thats not the point. The point is; why dont you calm down before you do whatever it is you are thinking about doing.
You dont even know what Im going to do.
Nope, Ned granted coolly. But I know you and your style well enough to know whatever it is you shouldnt do it.
What shouldnt I do? Carly challenged sounding increasingly less hostile, sounding in fact just shy of interested.
Smiling Ned said, Run off half cocked.
What makes you think Id do that?
Experience. He admitted bluntly. Whats wrong?
None of your business. Carly replied matching his bluntness.
Shoving his hands deep in his coat pockets Ned shrugged, Probably not. But I dont see anyone else asking.
Aside from my husband. Her words sounded weak, almost defeated even to her own ears.
Oh Im sorry is he here? Ned inquired with thinly disguised sarcasm. I figured hed still be in a holding cell meeting his new best friend Keller.
This isnt about Sonny. She stated crossly clearly trying to dodge his question. Its about Michael.
Well then I am interested. Ned insisted firmly.
Why?
Because, Ned said without disguising his frustration, Despite what you and Sonny may want to think Michael is a member of my family.
Biologically. Calry said flatly. Sonnys his father in every way that counts.
Poor Michael. Ned said his disgust at the notion painfully obvious.
Carly turned to leave. If this is going to turn into another evil Sonny talk Im outta here.
Ned reached down taking her gloved hand into his. Dont. She looked down but Ned made no move to withdraw his hand. We both want Michael happy. Lets try and think of a way to make that happen. He slowly slid his hand out of hers.
I dont want to think. Carly admitted angrily. I want to get my son and get him home. NOW.
Maybe you need to think about how to make that happen.
I go over to that Cassaweird island and drag his butt back home.
Maybe not the best plan. Ned rationalized evenly. Why dont we work on a better one?
Eyeing him distrustfully Carly said, Why would I want to discuss this with you much less work this over with you.
Im a Quartermaine, Ned pointed out logically. No one in town strategizes better than us.
Carly considered this for a long moment before saying, One cup of coffee. Then I do what I want.
Kellys then? He said turning and sliding his arm loosely around her waist.
Good grief, Dr. Kelly Lee exclaimed entering the staff locker room. I dont know how Patrick puts up with it.
Lainey looked up from clamping her beeper onto her scrubs. Puts up with what?
The Chief of Staff and Head of Cardiology. She announced huffing for emphasis. Twisting the dial on her locker Kelly explained further, They practically ran a dog and pony show testing Jason Morgan for everything under the sun.
Hes their son. Lainey rationalized clincally. A lot of parents would do the exact same for their son or daughter.
Even if that son was a hitman. Kelly challenged pulling an orange out of her locker.
Pulling on her coat Lainey suggested, Im sure they dont deal with that. Besides isnt he out of the mob.
So I hear. Kelly said disbelievingly. Of course working for the Cassadines may just be a different kind of corruption.
The Cassadine name is on our paychecks, Lainey reminded her blandly before glancing around as if looking for an interloper who might overhear them.
Oh stop shrinking me. Kelly said closing her locker. Do you want to get some coffee?
Lainey nodded then turned to the woman standing next to her, Mary you want to join us?
Thanks. Mary Bishop said flashing a bright smile before saying, I have an appointment.
Okay, Lainey said hurrying to catch up with Kelly, leaving Mary alone.
Alexis had sent Kristina out to the kitchen with Alice, supposedly to fix Daddy a snack, but more specifically because she could sense Jason was none to pleased with developments. Indeed, practically the second Kristina was out of the room Jason turned around asking, Jason is at Wyndamere?
Jaaon? Alexis said uneasily. You mean Michael.
Of course I meant Michael thats why I said Michael. He replied hotly.
Right. Alexis agreed uncertainly.
Since when?
Since around the time I had to call here and explain that you were in the hospital unconscious and that Sonny was in police custody.
Jason continued massaging his forehead demanding, How did he end up at Wyndamere?
Stefan and Nikolas took him there. Alexis explained logically. It was his choice. She looked down before adding uncomfortably. And one Carly is not terribly pleased with.
Jason rubbed his jaw a sign he was in a thoughtful mood. Of course not. He moved to get up. I have to fix this. Even as he sprang up he felt light headed. Alexis rose hurrying to his side. He held on to her for a moment seeming to try and regain his balance.
Pushing him down to the couch Alexis said, You have to sit down.
Even as he did as she asked, Jason protested vocally. I have to talk to Michael.
Ignoring Jasons agitated state Alexis responded coolly, Talk to Michael or take Michael back to Carlys?
Jason looked at Alexis confusedly. He should be at home.
This isnt like when he was a baby. Alexis said softly.
I know that! Jason said angrily.
Do you? Alexis challenged fiercely. Do you really understand that Michael may be feeling things you arent processing?
I understand feelings. He said half heartedly, a virtual admission in his words that he did not indeed understand them.
Alexis half shrugged sitting down beside him on the couch. You and me you are right were more alike than sometimes Im even comfortable with...In spite of that or maybe because of that I recognize you want to fix things for Michael. And I know that you equate fixing things with taking Michael back to Carly. Alexis tone remained soothing as a caress as she said, One of the things Nikolas and now Kristina have helped me to understand is that sometimes what a child needs to fix things isnt the same as what you or might desire.
What are you saying? Jason asked impatiently.
Im saying that your impulse to rush in, may be the very opposite of what Michael needs right now.
If hes upset or hurt thats my fault. Jason said reproaching himself.
Maybe it is. Alexis acknowledged thoughtfully. Jason looked over at her by now even his unreadable blank expressions were beginning to make a certain sense to her. You and I both played a role in putting Michael in Sonnys orbit. She reminded him quietly.
This isnt about Sonny.
Oh it is all about Sonny. Alexis protested angrily. Michael comes here because hes not happy in his home where he lives with Sonny. He left our house probably because hes uncomfortable that Sonny beat you up. Hes at Wyndamere I imagine in part because there he doesnt have to deal with any of the mess that is Sonnys life right now. Reemphasizing her point she added, Notice a common denominator Sonny...
He should be here with us. Jason said matter of factly.
He cant do that. Alexis said rationally. That would be betraying his father.
AJ? Jason asked clearly confused by her words.
Sonny. Alexis said equally confused by Jasons comment.
Jason began pulling himself up, I have to go talk to Michael.
Shaking her head dismissively Alexis stated, You are hardly in any condition to go play the hero charging in to save the day. And if you do charge in then what? You drag Michael home? You hand him back to Carly. Hes not an infant anymore.
Hes a little boy. Jason agreed angrily. A scared little boy that I have some responsibility for.
No hes not. Alexis disputed rationally. At least not emotionally. Michaels grown up quickly in large part because of choices both of us made. Jason closed his eyes and covered them with his palms. Alexis watched him silently for a long moment before asking, Do you want a pill?
Not now... He said clenching his hair.
Alice can I have some water? Alexis called loudly enough to be heard in the kitchen.
Jason grimaced at the shout but made no move to stand. I have to...
Let Carly handle it. Alexis suggested rummaging through her purse. Lifting a bottle of pills out she tapped the bottle letting two pills fall into her hand. Returning the bottle to her purse she crossed the room to where Jason lay in a prostrate position on the couch. Listen to me, She implored gravely. Right now the best thing you can do for Michael is to do nothing.
You dont understand.
I do. She said sitting down on the edge of the cushion. I understand how much you love Michael, and how much you feel responsible. But you need to step back and look at this objectively. Right now Michael is in a safe place. A place that according to Nikolas he seems relatively happy at. Meanwhile, you have a concussion. Maybe its better for you to sit back and let Carly handle this for a day or so. Give the bruises a little time to heal. Seeing his perplexed expression Alexis explained, I just think maybe seeing his uncle bruised and with a bandage covering half his face might not be the best thing for Michael.
Jason groaned before saying. I dont think Michael would notice the bandage.
Trust me Jason, Alexis said seriously. Helen Keller would notice that bandage.
Your water, Alice said entering the room and handing the glass to Alexis who passed it to Jason.
Washing the pills down with a grunt, Jason returned the glass to Alexis. Ill wait but in a day or so.
You can pull on those tights and play super hero. Alexis granted tiredly as if conceding a major point to him.
One thing though, Jason said warningly. Tell Stefan not to put Michael in his plans.
What plans? Alexis asked confusedly.
Jason merely reiterated. He doesnt get Michael. As if spent by his actions he closed his eyes and let his head sag against the pillow.
Dad there was a blizzard a few days ago. Serena reminded Scott loudly as they trudged toward his Jeep. I dont really feel like playing in the snow anymore. Twenty minutes before Scott had burst in the firehouse door shouting for Serena to put on her hard labor clothes and be ready to go.
Oh Dad, Im so cold. Scott said imitating her voice, lacking his usual mirth. Have you forgotten what today is? He asked seriously.
Serena felt herself slump slightly forward. Oh God, I did.
Still cold?
Did you buy gardenias? She answered by way of an explanation.
Have I ever forgotten to buy gardenias?
Nope. Serena said a stubborn affection for her fathers constancy peaking through her tone. Lets go.
Whats got you pissed off today? Anna asked after Frisco and Georgie had retreated to the den.
Pissed off. Stefan repeated the phrase. I will never understand Americans adoration for slang. Sighing he continued, However I suppose I am pissed off as you put it. He removed a crumpled piece of paper from his coat pocket. I found this in the garbage at Wyndamere.
Regarding him dubiously Anna said, Stefan I know you have paranoia issues, but really combing through the trash. Cant you pay someone to do that?
Your humor is ill timed. Stefan warned her icily.
Duly noted. Anna said taking a seat at the kitchen table and glancing over the paper. The WSB has a home page? Anna said seemingly surprised by this news. I guess everyone is in cyber space huh? Have you opened a MySpace page yet?
Your humor, Stefan sniffed dismissively.
Folding her arms Anna entreated, What is this about?
Have you been in contact with Nikolas?
Anna shook her head, No.
Is he aware of why you are in Port Charles?
I dont know, Anna replied honestly. Unless hes changed personas Nikolas, is wholly competent of assessing a situation. But he has not done so with my knowledge.
Holding the crumpled sheet of paper in his hand Stefan said, I found this in his wastebasket. I assumed, He let his words fall away. I was concerned hed contacted you.
He hasnt. Anna said sounding less angry than even moments before.
Stefan nodded before admitting, You know how I worry about Nikolas.
No one knows that better than I do. Anna admitted resignedly.
Not liking what he was hearing Frisco stepped back from his position by the door. Walking back to the couch he picked up his guitar.
Once the door was closed Georgie whispered quietly, as shed learned to do, How does Anna know Stefan?
Ex. Frisco said continuing to strum his guitar. How do you know Stefan?
I dont. Georgie said hurriedly. Not really. I know hes Nikolas uncle.
You know the prince. Frisco said sounding surprised and displeased by this information.
Hes in a bio class Im taking at PCU. Georgie said matter of factly. Hes my lab partner which is great because he does the dissecting. And hes the only partner Ive ever had who asks for regular study sessions. She said in a tone illustrating that she wholly approved of such requests.
Frisco took this in silently before asking, He isnt trying any princely come ons is he?
No way! Georgie said disgustedly. Hes old. Hes like 30!
Practically ancient. Frisco agreed wryly.
Besides hes totally in love with Emily Quartermaine. Georgie said before adding, They are really cute together. She said in a blissful tone familiar only to teenage girls.
Cute. Frisco groaned shaking his head and fighting against the impulse to make some crack about kids today.
Were you and mom cute?
Adorable. He reported dismissively before adding, Cute only carries you so far.
You and Anna are cute.
Frisco looked at Georgie oddly. Georgie porgie you know.
She smiled, I do. She said with a relaxed smile that seemed to be chiding him. You dont know, but I do.
Sonny faced his lawyer regarding him with a patient but condescending look. I am not going to jail. He repeated flatly dismissing the notion.
Meyer looked around dramatically. Sonny you are in jail.
Only until Im arraigned which you should be working on.
I am, Meyer replied irked by Sonnys tone. But its going to be a couple of hours...
Okay, Sonny said agreeably. Then Ill be in jail for a couple of hours. Thats it.
Meyer removed his glasses and began rubbing the bridge of his nose. This isnt like most of your previous arrests. He said aiming for patient but sounding exhausted. There were a restaurant full of witnesses.
Jason and I had a disagreement. Sonny said sitting down at the table. It happens.
Disagreement, Meyer repeated amusedly. Sonny that disagreement sent Jason to the hospital on a gurney and left him unconscious for hours. Calling that a disagreement is like saying Michael Vick believes in strict animal obedience training.
You do this all the time? Carly asked once they were seated in a corner table at Kellys. Wait around to scare women in tunnels.
I was over at the pandas when I saw you heading for the monkeys. Ned replied as if that information were explanation enough.
I didnt know you hung out at zoos.
I grew up in one. Ned replied smoothly, smiling at her over the rim of his coffee mug.
Well thats true enough. Carly granted warily. Remembering her earlier anger she warned him, Im not thrilled with your tunnels routine.
Ned sighed almost regretfully. I thought we were going to talk about helping Michael.
Carly watched Ned across the table seemingly uncertain what her next move should be. Laying her proverbial cards on the table Carly explained, Michael is staying at Wyndaweird.
And you dont like it. Ned surmised keeping the warm mug cradled in his palm.
Carly rolled her eyes before asking disdainfully. You figured that out by yourself.
Ignoring her comment Ned mused, Im not sure Id like my daughter being there.
But, Carly said supplying the word she expected next.
Ned swallowed a sip of coffee before saying, Im not sure its in your best interests to move him.
I wasnt expecting to see you. Alexis said rising from the couch when she saw her nephew entering from the hall.
Nikolas kissed her cheek lightly. I came in through the kitchen. I promised Michael I would retrieve his Charlie Bone books. He pronounced the title with an air of confusion as if dubious the title was correct. He keeps his books here. Alexis noted that Nikolas had inherited Stefans tic of posing a question as a statement.
Michael seems to be migrating more possessions here.
Nodding Nikolas said, I see. How is Jason? Emily tells me he was released. As always Nikolas tone suggested politeness rather than genuine interest.
This afternoon. Alexis agreed guardedly. Hes asleep. There doesnt appear to be any brain damage from the incident.
How would you know? Nikolas questioned apparently perplexed by the notion. Alexis cast a reproachful expression in Nikolas direction which caused Nik to rapidly change the subject. Has Sonny caused further disturbances?
No, Alexis said taking a seat and gesturing for Nikolas to do the same. Im certain his attorney is urging him to maintain a low profile.
I wasnt aware, Nikolas said contemptuously, That Sonny listened to anyone.
After considering his words Alexis offered, Going to jail isnt in Sonnys plans.
Ironic given his career choices. Nikolas replied haughtily. I still dont like this situation. I think you and Kristina should stay on the island.
And leave Jason here?
Im not concerned about Jason. Nikolas stated tersely.
I am.
Sighing Nikolas shook his head, I know you have a good heart, but do not become sentimental.
Im not sentimental. Alexis said firmly. Seeing Nikolas blank expression she granted, Okay a little...but this is different. You better than anyone knows what a Cassadine marriage means.
Unhappiness, infidelity, madness? He queried rhetorically.
Alexis regarded Nikolas for a moment before stating, You are very cynical for a man hoping to marry a young girl and bring her into our family.
Nikolas rose walking toward the terrace doors. The discussion isnt about me and Emily, its about your presence amid this virtual mafia showdown.
I dont think it will go that far.
Nikolas turned facing Alexis, Even you arent a good enough lawyer to convince me that you believe that.
I wonder, Alexis mused philosophically, What youd like me to say.
Nikolas offered her an odd half smile, Id like you to say that you and Kristina will leave this insanity behind.
And return to the insanity of Wyndamere. Alexis replied amusedly. No thanks.
All right, Nikolas said formally as if conceding defeat.
Now that youve interrogated me, Alexis said calmly. Let me ask you somethingWhat plans does Stefan have involving Michael?
Though hed only been staying at Wyndamere a few days, Michael already had an established routine once he returned from school. As soon as he entered the house hed sling his backpack over a table and then take the long walk toward the kitchen. The size of Wyndamere seemed to disturb some people, yet Michael found the house and the island fascinating. Arriving there felt like being dropped into a scary movie set in a haunted house. Every hidden crook and dark corner held out the possibility of surprise and or open terror. Oddly such duality appealed to him.
Also, as a child he had a kind of open access to the house that was not unlike being able to travel to a whole other world. One room might be full of antiques, another filled with weaponry, another musical instruments. Each time he opened a door he waited to see what he would discover.
His favorite room by far though was the kitchen. The room itself was not unique it had the same equipment virtually any kitchen would have. Still, the room was generally filled with people and had a different feel than the rest of the house.
The first time hed entered the kitchen the cook had almost dropped a pot. Apparently no member of the household had ever entered the room-later hed discovered that Nikolas wasnt even sure where the room was.
The staff expected him now. Every afternoon hed enter the room to find a cold glass of milk and several cookies waiting on him. Mrs. Lansbury or a member of the kitchen staff was generally waiting nearby. Michael was comfortable around adults the result of years spent talking to Leticia, Max, Johnny and other friends of his parents. The servants would ask him about his day and hed likewise ask them about their.
After his snack Michael liked to wander the house. This afternoon he walked by Stefans office finding it deserted. Stepping closer to the desk he saw Stefans stamp album opened. He observed a stamp hed not seen before. Michael made a mental note to ask Stefan about the stamps date and what geographic area it came from. Stefan, he knew, would welcome such questions. Stefan liked teaching him about stamps. Most nights hed spent the hour before dinner with Stefan. Sometimes they talked about stamp collecting, sometimes Stefan read from books Michael could not understand. It never mattered what Stefan said, Michael simply found Stefans voice relaxing, comforting like having a blanket draped over him.
Drifting from Stefans office he walked down the corridor and up two flights of stairs to what Emily called her sitting room. The room was dimly lit and painted in soft hues. Books lay scattered atop a table. Michael could recognize Nikolas books because they were older and hard bound. The paperbacks were Emilys and generally dog eared. Michael saw his copy of Treasure Island sitting on the table and began to move to retrieve it when he heard voices. By instinct he jumped back moving just past the door but leaving the door cracked enough so he could hear whatever was said.
Michael was a born eavesdropper. Years of being sent to his room had taught him the value of a cracked door. Besides he knew Emily wouldnt care about his eavesdropping. Shed bragged more than once about her superior skills in that department. She told him his talents proved he had some Quartermaine deep inside. He liked the idea even if he wasnt sold on the concept.
Crawling closer to the door he saw the man Emily was talking to. The mans face was vaguely familiar to Michael. He had been a friend of his Mamas once upon a time. Mamas friends seemed to vanish whenever his Dad entered the picture. Michael blinked away the thought feeling guilty for even thinking it... He forced himself to focus on the stocky man talking to Emily.
How did you get in? Emily asked moving tiredly toward the sofa.
Back entrance, Zander said matter of factly seeming ready to assist Emily but apparently thinking better of it and pulling away. They threw me out that way last time.
Oh, Emily said uncertain what response was expected of her. She dropped down on the couch and a visible sigh ran down the length of her body.
You look....
Tired, sick, pale. She offered her suggestions with a wan but bemused smile.
Zander looked down running his hands over the denim of his jeans. I heard you were really sick.
Emily shook her head despairingly. I forgot how news spreads in this town.
Youre okay right?
Stage three cancer. Emily reminded him flatly.
Youre going to be fine. Zander vowed seemingly as much for himself as for Emily.
Emily shrugged disinterestedly. Or I wont be. Its not like Im getting a vote.
Em.
I cant lie anymore Zander. She said determinedly. And I cant promise anyone, anything.
Zander nodded realizing the full implications of her words. I can, I should go.
No, Emily said quickly. I cant wallow either. So what did you come here for?
My best interest, Carly said lifting her brownie from her plate. Is to have my son here with me. She bit into the moist brownie savoring the taste of the chocolate on her tongue. Maybe Elizabeth Webber was actually good for something, her brownies were always delicious.
Ned watched her smiling, Short term possibly.
Possibly, Carly repeated the word disgustedly.
One of the first lessons my mother and grandfather taught me about business is its a sin to think short term. Never ever think about what you want today. Think about what you want 20 years down the line. Sitting his coffee cup down Ned mused, Id think an operator like yourself would have learned this.
You learned from your Grandfather, She said pronouncing the word haughtily. I learned from the trailer next door. Spencers and Bensons take what we want, when we want it.
And you think that means bringing Michael home now.
He belongs with me.
If you believe that then why not bring him home. Ned asked gently.
Carly returned her brownie to the plate and looked around the room as if surveying the area for interlopers. Because I cant understand....why he doesnt want me.
Im an optimist, Sonny declared forcefully. Ive been in tight spots before. Spots no one thought Id walk away from.
Meyer sighed putting his glasses in his pocket before returning his attention to Sonny. Im aware of your talent for escape.
You see, Sonny said tellingly having clearly missed the sarcasm in Meyers words.
This is different. Meyers warned his tone equally telling. This isnt speculation or an obscure deal gone bad. It happened in a room full of people all of whom identified you. Emboldened by his mood, Meyer continued on. You are facing a wholly different situation and one that you need to prepare seriously for...
A long tense moment passed as the men stared at each other neither blinking, neither giving ground. Sonny broke the silence virtually growling, I. Am. Not. Going. To. Prison!
So, Mary summed up after listening to Courtney recount her meeting with Alexis. Ill spare you the pat how did that make you feel. Its clear you are upset. Mary lifted the cup of Latt, shed picked up on the way to the session, to her lips. Are you surprised Alexis is upset?
Of course not, Courtney admitted sounding pained at the realization.
Then why talk to her?
We live in a small town, Courtney began, then as if tiring of the excuse she sighed. I dont even understand myself... She admitted as if at a loss to explain her situation. Are you married doctor?
Mary looked down at her wedding band feeling a twinge of uncertainty in how to best answer the question. Opting for simplicity she said, Yes.
Try to imagine you go on a trip, something horrible happens, all you want is to come back and be with the man that you love. Pausing Courtney tried to swallow the sob fighting to escape. And hes married to someone else. Courtney stopped and stared off into space for a long, silent moment. Returning her attention to Mary, Courtney continued her explanation adding, Every time I see Alexis its like I go right back to that moment. Im right back on that plane watching TV and finding out my fiancee is someone elses husband. A coldness came into her tone as she finished saying, Ill never not hate Alexis for that moment.
Taking in her patients words, Mary reminded her, It was Jasons choice to marry her.
I know that. Courtney agreed flatly. But its Alexis that I hate.
After only a half hour of work Serena looked up surveying the work she and her father had done with undisguised pride. Wow this looks good. Scott gave an undecipherable grunt continuing his digging. Serena silently watched him for a long moment before saying, You never forget....
I made a promise to your mom.
You really loved her. Serena said softly. Sometimes Im jealous.
Of me? Scott asked clearly surprised by this information.
Of everyone who knew her. Lucy, Bobbie, Tony all tell me stories. But thats all they are stories. Rising to her feet she looked at a newly planted row of marigolds. I watch tapes and see her and hear her, but its just that tapes. Serena said bitterly. I wish I could just talk to her. Not even important stuff either. Just mom and daughter stuff.
I think your mom would have loved that too. Scott said wistfully.
Its not even that, Serena said painfully. Sometimes I feel like I forget her.
Scotty stopped working to look over at his daughter. Whatcha mean?
When people ask me about my mother I think about Lucy. Critically she added, When the school calls for Mrs. Baldwin I know they mean Florence. Shaking her head Serena said bitterly. Its like Mom never even mattered.
Scott dropped the shovel and crossed to where Serena stood. She mattered. She changed my life, she gave me you.... Scott seemed to be fighting his emotions repeating sadly, She changed everything.
Do you still love Mom? Serena asked softly.
Scott cupped Serenas face in his hands. I will love your mother until they put me in the ground.
Serena smiled blinking away the tears filling her eyes. Me too. She promised as Scott hugged her tightly against him.
Why would you think Stefan has plans with Michael? Nikolas asked flipping through the pages of the Charlie Bone novel Alice had handed him mere minutes before.
Surveying him Alexis realized Nikolas had absorbed far more than she or Stefan realized. The non-answer answer had taken both her and Stefan years to master. Yet, Nikolas seemed to inhabit the trait, and she doubted hed ever been given a single lesson in the skill. Recognizing this Alexis wasnt sure whether to feel proud or concerned.
Jason seems to believe that he does.
Nikolas chuckled somewhat indulgently. I hardly think Jason has great insight into Uncles plans.
Perhaps not, Alexis agreed shrewdly keeping her own thoughts under wraps. But why would he be suspicious of Stefan?
Everyone is suspicious of Stefan. Nikolas granted thoughtlessly. Often with reason admittedly. But with Michael? Alexis that sounds even far fetched for Morgan logic.
Whos idea was it for Michael to stay at Wyndamere? Alexis asked silently chiding herself for not asking the question before.
Michaels.
Doesnt that seem a bit odd to you?
Closing the book Nikolas said, No. He seems to feel some kind of camaraderie with Stefan. I do not understand it, Nikolas admitted candidly. Nor can I dismiss the fact Michael seems genuinely comfortable with Stefan.
That frightens me. Alexis admitted bluntly.
Ned looked at Carly utterly taken aback by her candor. Defensiveness, impulsiveness he had expected, but candor he had not banked on. I try, I try so hard, Carly admitted her voice cracking slightly. Sliding his hand across the table Ned interlaced his fingers with Carlys caressing her hand softly. I give him everything. He has a beautiful house, a nice school... She shook her head confusedly. I dont understand why isnt that enough?
I dont know, with my own child. Ned said soothingly. The easy answer is yes, but judging from Brookie and my situation it must not be enough.
Why is that? Carly asked painfully. Ive given him everything I wanted.
You have everything you ever wanted. Are you happy? Ned asked before motioning Penny over and asking for a check.
I need a favor. Zander said at length, having stopped rubbing his thigh. Emily said nothing letting him volunteer what the favor might be. Information. He said flatly. I need information.
Emily took a sip from the glass of water the servants habitually set out for her. Letting the cool liquid run down her dry throat Emily took her time before replying, What kind?
I need to know if Lucky is in love with Gia.
I dont know. Emily said taking another sip of water. Lucky keeps that stuff pretty close to the vest.
Weighing her words Zander demanded, Is that Lucky keeps that stuff close to the vest, or I keep Luckys confidences close to the vest.
Both. Emily admitted frankly. She had developed the Quartermaine trait of being simultaneously utterly frank and strangely cagey...telling the truth but in such a fashion as to make you question every word she said.
Right. Zander said nodding and chuckling somewhat caustically. I forget how your friends make it okay to lie to me.
Would you prefer that I toss them over? The question was rhetorical and she did not bother waiting for a response before saying, And for the record I havent. Lucky hasnt told me much.
Zander shook his head, Come on Em.
Why does this matter?
Shes having my baby! Zander reminded her irritably.
Are you in love with her?
Zander ran the heel of his hand across the back of his neck. I dont want to discuss that.
Okay, Emily said evenly. Then why ask for information.
I just need to know. He said insistently. Thanks for nothing though. He said then turning and walking away.
Uncle is good with children. Nikolas reminded her loyally.
With you. Alexis subtly corrected Nikolas statements.
Smiling Nikolas added, And my sister.
Mirroring her nephews smile Alexis said, I believe he had a vested interest there too.
He cares about Lulu.
I dont doubt that. Alexis agreed her voice softening slightly. Whatever his good intentions...Stefan can never wholly divorce himself from his plans.
And you think he has plans for Michael.
I thought it when Jason said it, Alexis admitted coolly. Now from your responses I know it. Alexis said logically carefully removing any emotion from her tone. I just dont know what it is, yet.
Nikolas facial expression never changed. It would seem with your husband upstairs battered that you might find more relevant concerns than seeking some type of soap opera style scandal. He said dismissively. This type of theory making is better suited to Carly Corinthos than you Aunt.
I quite agree. Alexis agreed smoothly. It troubles me to realize that you are allying yourself with your uncle in whatever he has in mind for Michael.
Nikolas pondered her words for a moment before saying, You said it yourself. He said rising from his seat. Cassadines protect the family.
How does that involve Michael?
Nikolas lifted the book from the coffee table saying encouragingly. Youre the lawyer figure it out. Good day, He said quickly walking out of the room.
So, Anna said sliding into the booth next to Frisco. Michangelos was packed and the only available table had been a booth toward the back of the room. Frisco took the side opposite the wall, unsurprised when Anna slid in next to him. Every WSB agent had seen The Godfather. You never sat with your back to anyone.
They had been seated quietly for some time, had ordered drinks and were now reading the menu. Only Anna thought Friscos menu reading was studied rather than natural. Despite the rattle of silverware and the noise in the place, Anna sensed an odd silence had descended over them and she was puzzled by why. After shed shown Stefan out, Georgie had made to quick apologies and rushed out. Frisco had seemed bewildered, but not by his daughterit was if something else was troubling him. Anna had asked but hed brushed her questions aside and suggested they go eat.
Still, whatever was bothering him seemed to continue to preoccupy his mind for it had been a silent ride over and looked to be an equally silent meal for he made no attempts at even the pretense of conversation.
Why did Georgie have to rush off?
You know kids. Frisco said vaguely. One second they are one place, the next they are online illegally downloading copy written material.
Thats a vague response.
What did you and Stefan discuss? Frisco asked eager to change the subject.
Oh, Anna said vaguely. You know Stefan issues of paranoia and conspiracy.
About what? Frisco asked scanning the menu as a means of avoiding eye contact.
Sighing Anna opened the menu, Who knows. With Stefan any discussion requires an interpreter, and a psychologist to decipher.
You two were married. Frisco said bluntly.
Anna looked up, And?
Nothing, nothing. Frisco said dismissively. I just have a lot on my mind. He added weakly hoping it would suffice for an explanation.
Anna eyed him skeptically. Is everything is okay?
Fine. Frisco lied Georgies words echoing in his head. So manicotti or ravioli a question for the ages huh? He said trying to dispel Georgies words and the image of Stefan and Anna from his brain.
There are ghosts here? Emily asked tremulously.
Oh yeah, AJ replied breezily. A house as old as this one has a couple of old residents wandering around the halls. No worries though once you get used to it they arent much trouble.
Much? Emily asked her voice sounding wobbly.
Well you know, AJ replied vaguely. Little bit of chain rattling, some moaning, stuff getting moved around. As if on cue a loud moaning suddenly came from upstairs. They must have heard us talking.
Sooooo, Emily said uncomfortably. This happens a lot?
All the time, AJ said matter of factly. Dont worry in a year or two youll hardly notice.
Uh huh. Emily said clearly uneasy. I think Im going to go call Lucky and see if he wants to do some worming in the garden.
AJ struggled to hold his composure as Emily closed her bedroom door. Turning around and seeing Jason fighting laughter, AJ gave up the battle completely. That was priceless.
Jason cracking up as hard as his brother said, You think we sold her on the ghosts.
Totally. AJ said grinning. I think there are going to be some real benefits to having a little sister.
Definitely. Jason agreed laughing and putting an arm around AJs shoulders. Come on lets sneak into the kitchen, eat some of Cooks fudge cake and figure out what the ghosts will do next.
Jason literally jerked awake. He never dreamed and yet dreams... Puzzled by the experience Jason rubbed his face, then pushed back the covers and walked toward the bathroom. His head was throbbing and it was hours until his next pain pill. He blamed the bandage. Beneath the thin fabric he could feel the wound pulsating. Stopping before the smoked glass mirror he looked at the figure facing him.
A series of yellowed bruises dotted his face. A series of purple like dots scattered among the bruises, marking the spot where Sonnys nails had penetrated his skin. A visual map of the attack etched across his face. In the hospital hed woken to find thick ice packs laying atop his face and forehead, trying to reduce the swelling. He had not asked for a mirror.... Alexis and his parents faces alone had told him it was bad. He hadnt realized quite how bad it was.
Reaching under the bandage he lightly pulled it off, feeling a slight stinging from the glue ripping away from his skin. Tossing the bandage on the counter he looked at his forehead. A zipper like line of stitches ran across his forehead. Drake had droned on and on about what excellent sutures hed performed and how the lines would fade in time. But standing in front of the mirror Jason saw a figure from Kristinas books. Frankenstein. He said tiredly as if greeting his own reflection.
After her meeting with Ned, Carly felt all over the place. His words had infuriated her but she could not totally dismiss them. Ned was not a stranger to her, three or four months ago she would have wagered she knew him pretty well. Lately though he seemed different...she could not put her finger on precisely what was different about him but something absolutely was... She might have contemplated the change more if she had returned as shed hoped to an empty penthouse.
Instead, she found an equally over stimulated Courtney whod returned from her therapy typically talkative and emotional. Courtney had recounted her encounter with Alexis, which had not particularly interested Carly, in the most tiring detail. Then she had launched into a lengthy recap of her therapy.
Carly supposed she had been married to Sonny to long because she found herself stumbling toward the bar much as he would have done, and making the same half-bored grunts he might have made. After a few minutes Carly interrupted with a flat, I had coffee with Ned. She didnt know why she said it or what she hoped Courtney would say.
Really. Courtney said sounding decidedly disinterested in the news.
I went to the zoo for Michaels trip but he wasnt there.... and I ran into Ned.
What would you and Ned talk about? Courtney asked confusedly. While her comment seemed nice enough Carly interpreted an air of surprise as if Ned was to something. Carly felt too tired to try and figure out what Courtney meant. We talked about Michael for a while.
Why? Courtney said blandly. What could he know.
Michael is his nephew. Carly responded quickly.
In blood only. Courtney reminded her curtly. Besides Ned should worry more about his own children, Courtney argued dismissively. If Ned was raising his own daughter, then Jason could have a child of his own.
Pushing the cold glass against her now aching temple Carly said, Jason chose that role.
And its very noble, but if Ned focused more...
Seeing Courtneys line of thinking Carly cut her off with a blunt, Jason would only get more defensive and protective. You may not like it, I want to spit every time I think about it, but Jason has appointed himself Kristinas protector and Alexis, She paused wrinkling her nose, I try not to even imagine what goes on between those two.
But if Kristina is the major draw, Courtney mused thoughtfully.
Alexis comes with the package.
I know he cares about Alexis, Courtney said thoughtfully, I just dont know how much.
Carly put the glass to her mouth taking a sip of water before responding, I thought you were supposed to be focusing on other things.
I am, I am. Courtney repeated quickly and unconvincingly. I need to do something... She said restlessly. I think Im going to stop by the courthouse go to Sonnys arraignment. Almost as an afterthought she asked, Did you want to come?
Carly silently shook her head, You go. One of us should be there.
Courtney lifted her purse and coat already moving toward the door. I think Ill take Max.
Fine, fine. Carly agreed disinterestedly. She appeared bored, however in reality something had latched onto her attention. Whatever much of Port Charles may have thought Carly had a lively mind and it rarely stopped whirling, developing new ideas, noticing odd behaviors, etc. However, it was only after the door closed that Courtneys earlier words became clear. So clear that the words echoed loudly in Carlys head roaring like a stereo turned all the way up, blasting her mental eardrums with the impact of the words weight. Neds children. Carly mouthed repeating Courtneys earlier words. Then as if hearing an audio tape... Child. Carly said speaking to the empty rooms while hearing Neds voice in her head. I wouldnt want my child there. She said repeating his words. Not children. Child. She said the word softly but inside her head the word thundered exploding with the sounds of rockets. Child. Ned had a child.
Climbing the stairs Alexis saw Jasons door was half ajar. The sound of an unfamiliar gasping sound caused her to stop in front of the door. Peering through the half closed door she saw Jason sitting on the bed pressing his hands to his face brokenly sobbing.
Seeing Jason like this for a moment seemed to virtually paralyze Alexis. Jason mad, Jason with a headache, Jason exasperated she could take. Those Jasons she knew... but Jason emotional, much less openly weeping that was a Jason shed never imagined. And here he was sitting on the bed....crying. She would have found it no stranger if an alien was sitting there. Crying Jason...the two words did not fit.
Watching him Alexis felt a thousand conflicting emotions unsure whether to enter the room or pull back and walk away. She thought of Courtney stagnant unable to move on to let go. Remembered her past with Ned her crippling unwillingness to trust in what they had. The night in the Sahara with Jax... Her fear of commitment. Her lack of fear leading right to Sonnys satin sheets. Paralyzed from moving in one relationship, fearful of starting another, moving too fast in another...
As always she felt torn between thought and emotion. Intellectually she felt it was a risk. Married or not she and Jason had boundaries. Every kiss broke them further, but a precious few still existed. If she walked in that would be one more wall torn down.
Intimacy had always frightened her. Intimacy got her mothers throat cut. Intimacy meant promising things for a future. And she did not believe in the future. Yet, she and Jason...whatever had contrived them, however forced their connection they were indeed connected, linked, more alike than either was comfortable with. They had lived together for months, parented Kristina for months. And she knew each time shed fallen hed rushed in to pick her up and try and help her in whatever way she could. Hed held her for hours after Helena had wrecked their reception. In the car the night hed told her about Sonnys threats hed kissed her with so much passion shed wanted to rip every wall down be with him, only with him. Shed pulled back then, but now she felt herself stepping forward damning the walls and all that stood between them.
The only thing constant was change and planned or not she and Jason had changed. He was her husband, he was Kristinas father, who knew about forever but for now for whatever reason Jason meant something real. I missed you. It might mean something or nothing. If she walked away, shed never have to know. Putting her hand on the knob she realized she wanted to know.
She could have pulled back a hundred times. She hadnt. And now she didnt want to. She wanted to comfort him as hed comforted her, give him whatever she could. Help him put this behind him. How to do it she wasnt sure, yet she realized finally that she wanted to.
Crossing the room she moved carefully, behaving in the nature of approaching a wounded animal. Her approach was purposefully slow and deliberate as if she feared him lashing out. Lowering herself onto the mattress beside him, she raised her hand holding it aloft for a long moment before resting it along the base of his neck. She let the hand rest there against his warm skin allowing him to adjust to the contact. Despite her caution she had expected him to flinch, he didnt. Instead, he leaned against her as if deriving some comfort from her touch and from her presence. Lowering her hand she rubbed his neck and shoulders feeling the shuddering in his body lesson and finally cease. She said nothing during her ministrations; knowing words would not comfort Jason.
I dont even know why Im crying. He said breaking the silence and sounding almost apologetic.
The doctors said your condition might cause this. Alexis reminded him soothingly, continuing to rub his back.
Its not that. Or maybe it is.... Jason admitted tiredly. I laid in bed all last night thinking about.... He did not specify what but he did not need to. I never thought Sonny...
Resting her head against Jasons, Alexis said, Sssshhh.
I keep reliving that moment, He said bitterly. Over and over. Keep remembering it, keep feeling it.
Dont, Alexis cautioned feeling her own eyes filling.
No matter what they give me, He admitted plainly, I cant forget.
Dont, Alexis said softly surprising herself with her next words. Dont ever forget. Jason blinked clearly thrown by her words. Alexis laid her hands alongside his face. Never forget what he did. Bitterly she added, I never will.
Jason looked at her for a moment before promising, Thats something else we have in common. Their eyes locked as Jason lowered his head toward hers. He brushed his lips against hers, tentatively as his lip was busted busted. The kiss was brief, and she knew his moan was from pain rather than pleasure.
Im sorry, Alexis said automatically. I know youre hurt.
Sssh. He said planting a soft kiss on her forehead. Then sitting back slightly Jason shrugged off his open shirt and laid back against the headboard. Watching him Alexis saw him lift his arms clumsily. Understanding his meaning Alexis crawled beside him resting her cheek against his chest, hearing the faint beat of his heart. He silently stroked her hair saying nothing. She remained likewise mute respecting his need for silence.
They lay like that for a long while savoring the quiet of the room and the silent comfort they were giving each other. After a time Alexis adjusted her head so she could look at Jason. To her surprise he was returning her gaze. Wordlessly she slid up so their faces were laying on pillows inches apart. Caressing her face Jason said softly and urgently, It has to be different. At any other time Alexis might have asked questions, pressed for an explanation, but at that moment she chose to interpret his words as something hopeful.
Despite Meyers requests the judge had refused to bar the press from the courtroom. Your client involved himself in a very public incident. The judge had informed Meyer in a pre-appearance meeting. He invited the public into this incident. And indeed the public, in the guise of the press, had shown up in droves. ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, FOX, local TV stations, radio stations all had representatives in the courtroom. Meyers tried hard to ignore the noise without much success.
When Sonny was led into the courtroom he made no pretense of ignoring the press. Quite the opposite he flashed them a toothy smile. When he took a seat beside his attorney, Meyer leaned over saying confidentially. You might try for humility versus grandstanding.
Sonny seemed not to have heard him because he said, Carlys not here.
Your sister is. Meyer rationalized calmly.
Carly should be here. Sonny said more angrily. This doesnt look good.
Meyer fought the urge to roll his eyes. Your being arrested doesnt look good. Your wife not being here is the least of your problems.
This is going to start talk.
Your getting in a public brawl did that handily. Meyer said already moving toward his feet as the bailiff called for all to rise.
Taking a seat the judge without preamble or preparation intoned seriously, Mr. Corinthos, you are accused of assault and battery, and creating a public nuisance. How do you plead? The lights from flashes and the camera crews illuminated the room, but the room was as silent as a temple as everyone waited for a response.
Sonny rose fixing his eyes on the judge before replying confidently, Not guilty.

Another chapter! Thank you, thank you, thank you!
