Mate and Checkmate
Prologue
How had they all gotten there? Angela thought as she stared at Mac Scorpio. She looked around the chapel at General Hospital. It was mid-February and bitter cold in the upstate New York town they lived in, but it had gotten very cozy and warm where everyone was. There was her mother and younger sister, Alexis and Melanie Davis. The entire Spencer family, Luke, Laura, and Lulu, even Lucky with Scorpio. Sonny Corinthos and Jasper Jax, two men who disliked each other, who had competed for the same women, including Alexis, were here. Lorenzo Alcazar, himself a man who had run-ins with the Cassadine family and the Corinthos organization, was here. Ned Ashton had been here and Mickey Villianov was there to support Angela. Nikolas Cassadine had heard the entire story that had changed his life.
Angela looked at Mac again and the police commissioner was waiting for a response. She let out a deep sigh and began her story.
Chapter 1-Three Days Before
"Mom are you sure you're up to this?" Angela Davis asked her mother. Her mother was battling lung cancer and had a chemo treatment the day before. In the past few months that she had been undergoing the treatments, Alexis had the worst reactions and Angela worried about her.
"I'm fine. I have to go. Who else will keep Luke and Nikolas in line?" Alexis replied.
"Isn't that the description of what Laura does?" her father Mikkos Cassadine asked as he entered the family room holding his youngest granddaughter, Molly.
"If any of you have forgotten, I am an aunt," Alexis replied as she got her daughter Kristina's coat on.
"Actually, you're a great-aunt, not to make you feel old or anything," Angela joked.
Alexis glared at her as she looked around the room. "Do we have everything? Spencer's presents, coats, gloves?"
They were prepared to leave for Kelly's and Spencer Cassadine's first birthday party when the phone rang.
"Let me get that. Get the car warmed up and I'll be out in a sec," Alexis told her father and daughter. As they left she grabbed the phone. "Alexis Davis? Hello Dr. Trent. You do? Alright, what do they say? I see. Thank you for calling." She hung up the phone and went outside to join her family
Kelly's Diner was closed for a private party. It happened that the manager's grandson was turning one and they were holding the party there. The door then opened and the proud grandmother and great-grandmother entered, both women dragging a man inside. Mike Corbin, the manager, saw the scene and had to laugh.
"I see you got him here," Mike commented.
"At the rate he's going Spencer will be more mature than him," the great-grandmother, Lesley Webber, said as she chucked her finger at her son-in-law.
"Laura, why am I here?" Luke Spencer whined.
Lesley smiled. "See what I mean?"
At that Lulu Spencer, the younger daughter of Luke and Laura, walked in followed by her friend, Dillon Quartermaine. She laughed when she saw her father, knowing just what was going on. Shortly thereafter, Sonny Corinthos came in with his sons, Michael and Morgan, who ran to their grandfather Mike.
"Is everything ready? This has to be the best birthday party ever," Michael asked.
Mike laughed. "Yes, but I could use your help in the back," he said as he led the boys into the kitchen.
Sonny came over to Luke and Laura. "You made it."
"Yes, under duress," Laura said. "Luke, it is important. Besides, you and Nikolas have been getting along so well."
"Look, I admit I have been able to tolerate the little Prince. My concern is great-grandpa Mikkos," Luke said.
At that, Alexis Davis walked in with her father and daughters, followed by Lucky Spencer and his estranged wife Liz, with her son Cameron. She smiled at Luke, Laura and Sonny. The latter could tell something was up with her when Kristina came up to him. The daughter they shared bestowed her father with an enthusiastic smile.
"Daddy, Mommy has something to tell you," she said as she hugged him.
Alexis walked over to him as Kristina went to look for her grandfather and brothers. Sonny saw her as she held Molly. "Kristina told me you need to tell me something." Looking over at Luke and Laura, he added, "We can go somewhere else."
Alexis smile widened. "No, here is fine. I want to share my news before the birthday boy gets here." She sat down. "Dr. Trent called as we were leaving. He had my latest test results."
Laura looked at her with concern. "Is everything alright?"
Alexis nodded. "More than alright. My cancer is in remission."
Sonny embraced her, as did Luke. "Well, congrats Natasha. This is great," he said.
Kristina came in, being chased by her brothers. Sonny grabbed her and swung her around. "So, Mommy is all better. You happy about that, sweetie?"
Kristina nodded as Nikolas came in with Emily Quartermaine and Spencer. The party began and went on for a while, with minimum problems from Luke and Mikkos. At one point, Mikkos took his granddaughter aside.
"With the news about your mother's health, maybe we should consider coming forward with the truth," Mikkos suggested.
Angela was about to answer when the door to the diner swung open and Ric Lansing rushed in. The District Attorney, and Molly's father, was not in a partying mood.
"Well hello there, Angela," Ric smirked.
"Lansing, this is a family party. You should leave," Mikkos told him.
"But I'm family, Mikkos. And I want to see my daughter," Ric replied. He proceeded to walk over to where Alexis was sitting holding Molly on her lap. He hunched down to his daughter's eye level. "Hey sweetie, hey, Daddy's here."
Alexis turned to him as Sonny came over. "Ric, you should leave. You can see Molly later."
Sonny moved behind Ric. "You need to leave." To illustrate his point, Mike, Nikolas and Luke were all standing behind him, glaring daggers at the DA.
Ric looked at the situation and decided to retreat. Before he left, though, he had to make one last comment. "Fine. But I will be going to a judge and bringing up your medical records. You are not well enough to be caring for a child Molly's age."
Alexis rose and handed Molly off to Angela. She then strode over to her estranged husband and with all her fury rebuked him. "You do that. But don't think the judge will side with you. Dr. Trent informed me today that the cancer has gone into remission." She went to the door and held it open for him. "You lost your last bullet, Ric."
He looked at her and, without comment, walked out.
Ric stood outside as Mickey Villianov approached the party. "It's for family only," he said snidely.
Mickey smiled. "Even if I wasn't dating Angela I would still be family. Remember, Nikolas is my cousin." Before he went in he turned to Ric. "Mr. Lansing, as a piece of advice. You have made powerful enemies in Port Charles. Be careful what battles you chose to fight. If you lose on any front, you could lose your life."
"Is that a threat?" Ric asked.
Mickey shook his head. "Merely advice." With that, he walked in and joined the party.
Inside, Mikkos walked over to his daughter. His pride and joy, Natasha had yet again slain another one of the dragons that had come after her. Two, he thought, remembering the cancer. Though she was not out of the woods, things were looking supremely better than they had a few months ago when he had arrived in town. He embraced her. "You did good in standing up to that jackass."
"Thank you, but I do pity him," she responded.
"Why?" he asked. "Since I have been here, he has done little to warrant pity. He has tried to steal your child, ignored a little girl he proclaimed to adore, disrespected you..."
"He wasn't always like that, Father. Something turned him. I just wish I knew what," she wondered aloud.
Mikkos harrumphed. "Whatever it is, put it out of your mind. Listen, tomorrow I would like to meet with you, Angela and Nikolas. We have family business to discuss."
Alexis winced. "Could we make it for the day after? I just want to spend the day out with my girls. Maybe we can even take the jet to Manhattan and see Melanie, celebrate the good news."
Mikkos smiled indulgently. "Of course. This business can wait another day." With that, the party continued, without further problems.
