She was still unconscious so he helped himself to a scotch. He reached for a glass and noted a scratch on his hand. She could be vicious when she wanted to be.
He tried to tell himself she was in a state of shock, she wasn't herself. He couldn't hold her responsible for any of her actions, she had misinterpreted the situation and thought she and Kristina were about to die.
Truth was he really didn't give a damn. After everything they had been through, everything they had shared, she should have trusted him, believed in him. At the moment he could care less about her shock, he wanted her to wake up so he could scream at her. He was in the mood for one Hell of a fight. In fact, it was the only thing he could think of that would calm him down.
Kristina was fast asleep in her carrier. Totally peaceful, trusted him completely. How could a baby have more sense than her mother? It occurred to him that even if Alexis woke up they couldn't fight on the plane. At least they couldn't have the sort of fight he was itching for. The cabin was too small and he intended to yell too loud to fight in front of the baby. He was angry with Alexis, not her daughter.
He was angry with Alexis. More angry than he ever would have believed possible. It was so much easier to be angry than to be scared.
She'd been unconscious too long.
"Wong!"
"Yes, Miss Alexis?"
Alexis looked out the front door at the drive way and pointed. "Wong, how am I supposed to get to the car? I thought you were going to clean up the dead bodies?"
"I tried. I used the hose."
"How am I supposed to get Kristina over all those dead bodies in these heels?" She looked down to draw his attention to the stunning ivory satin pumps she was wearing.
"I'll get the rake," Wong nodded.
"It's too late. I'm getting married. I need you to drive me to the wedding."
She turned around and he was gone. She lifted Kristina into her arms and then hoisted up the hem of her wedding gown.
She was going to get blood all over her shoes. Was there any way to get blood out of white shoes?
She exited the house and marched over the dead bodies and managed to get into the back of the limo without any of them grabbing her or Kristina. The dead could be so touchy feely at times.
But the limo was a stick shift and she couldn't drive a stick.
"Wong!"
The window that separated her from the driver was lowered.
"It's okay Alexis, I'll drive you."
"Sonny?"
"Yes," Sonny answered.
"I thought you were dead?"
"I am," he said.
"Okay, can you drive a stick?"
"Yes."
"Can you get us there in time?"
"Yes, Alexis."
"You should hurry. I don't want to be late."
"Okay, Alexis." Sonny started the car.
"Sonny?"
"Yes, Alexis."
"I'm sorry you're dead."
"It's okay," he shrugged.
"Did it hurt?" she asked.
"When you killed me?"
"Yes, did it hurt when I killed you?"
"Not so much." He shook his head.
"Are you mad?"
"Not anymore."
"I'm still sorry."
"Hey, remember when I lied to you about Zander and when I dumped you for Carly?"
"You never dumped me, I left."
"I let you think that."
"You did? Well, that was nice."
"I think it was. It was nice. I dumped you because you hyperventilated in bed."
"Oh."
"You should get that checked. The asthma, I mean."
"Does Carly ever hyperventilate in bed?"
"No, Carly knows how to breathe. Everyone knows how to breathe except you. That's why no one loves you. I could never love a woman who can't breathe."
"Oh."
"We're here," Sonny announced.
Alexis looked out the window. They were in front of the Vienna Opera House.
"Thank you for driving me, Sonny."
"No problem."
"I'm still really sorry you're dead. Do you want to stay for the wedding?"
"No, I have to get back."
"Back where?"
"Back to the house. I promised Wong I would help him with the dead bodies."
"They're really starting to pile up," Alexis nodded.
"Yes, they'll start to stink soon. We're going to use the leaf blower."
Alexis climbed out of the limo and held Kristina in her arms. "That's a good idea." She smiled and looked at Kristina. "Say good-bye to Daddy."
"Good-bye, Daddy," Kristina waved.
Sonny looked confused as he drove away and then Alexis remembered she'd never told him he was Kristina's father.
She guessed it was okay he knew now, since he was dead.
She led Kristina up the steps. "We're late, baby."
"Mommy, when I grow up, can I marry a murderer, too?"
"Yes, baby. We'll find a nice murderer for you to marry."
"Promise, Mommy?"
"Yes, baby, I promise."
She could hear the organ music before she opened the door. They stepped inside and there was a pay phone ringing.
Alexis wanted to curse because she was going to be late, but she remembered not to curse in front of Kristina.
She answered the phone. "Hello?"
"Alexis, it's Sonny."
"Did the leaf blower work?"
"I think so. I think it worked."
"Good."
"But Alexis..."
"What?"
"Wong called the school. He told them you can't drive a stick. You have to repeat 11th grade."
"Wong told?"
"Yes."
"I knew I couldn't trust him. He told them?"
"Yes."
"But I've already finished. I went to college and law school and everything."
"You have to give all the diplomas back. Yale called. They know. They're really mad you can't drive a stick Alexis."
"Wong told them?"
"Yes, he told everyone. You have to go back to 11th grade and do it all over."
"But, I'm getting married."
"You can do it after."
"Are you sure?"
"Yes, I asked. They said you can do it over after you get married."
"Okay. I'll go back tomorrow then. Do I have to wear a uniform?"
"Yes, Alexis. You have to. Those are the rules."
"Okay, I'll go back tomorrow."
"Good-bye, Alexis."
She hung up the phone. She was sad he was dead. Maybe he could have gone back to school with her if he wasn't dead.
She didn't know where her school uniform was anymore. The school would be mad.
"Mommy, was that Daddy?"
"Yes, baby."
"Does he know me?"
"No, baby."
"Because he's dead?"
"Yes."
"Because you killed him?"
"Yes."
He'd have to wait until they reached the compound to really let her have it.
The Compound. He swallowed his scotch in one gulp and poured himself another. The compound was no place to take a lady, much less a baby. It was not set up for visitors. His men, the men who stayed there, they were not accustomed to company. They could follow orders, but he would have to be careful, they were loyal but some of them lacked sense. He never wanted to expose Alexis and her child to this side of his life.
The people, the remote location, he would be taking them deep into the jungle.
Vaccinations, they would both need vaccinations. He picked up the phone and called his personal physician, the only man he would let treat him while he was home. Home? Did he really consider it home? He didn't know if that were true anymore. It had seemed to suit him before, but now that it was all wrong for Alexis and the baby..
What did that have to do with him? He was still the same man, right?
They would need vaccinations, clothes, baby things, a crib..with mosquito netting? There was no air conditioning. He was used to it, but Kristina would be miserable. Could he have it installed? It would take months. The compound was ancient and remote. Just finding someone able, much less willing, to do the job would take time and then there was getting all the equipment shipped...the bribes...he felt overwhelmed just thinking about it.
Shots. He told himself as he waited for the operator to connect him. One thing at a time. He would have the physician meet him at the airport.
"You're late!" Mikkos snapped.
Alexis turned towards him. "I'm sorry."
"Everyone is waiting."
"Everyone came?" she smiled.
"No, not Stefan. He said a Phantom of the Opera wedding was tacky."
"Stefan said tacky?"
"I think he said vulgar."
"You came."
"I'm dead, I had no choice and you want me to give you away."
"Will you give me away?"
"If you can prove you're my daughter, I have no choice. I have to give you away. It's a father's duty. You have to prove it, though. You better prove it. If I had to come here dead and you can't prove it, I'll be angry and I'll spank you."
Alexis pulled on the gold chain around her neck and showed him the medallion.
"Good enough." He held his arm out to her. "You have to get a shot. If you cry when they give you the shot, I'll spank you."
"You can't spank me, father. I don't believe in spanking children."
"You're not a child, you're a grown woman and you've been naughty."
"I have not."
"Yes, you have. You want to have sex with that boy."
"What boy?"
Mikkos pointed to the stage. He pointed at Lorenzo. Lorenzo was standing on the stage waiting to marry her.
Katherine Bell sucked in a breath. "Why is HE marrying HER?"
Chloe checked her reflection in the mirror. "It's the chandelier. She has him standing under the chandelier in the south west corner. It's for love."
"She trapped him," Katherine cackled.
"It's feng shui." Alexis's sister Kristina picked up her bouquet of flowers.
"No," Alexis shook her head. "That chandelier was there when I moved in."
"She's lying," Katherine hissed, "she bought it at Home Depot."
"I've never been to Home Depot," Alexis insisted.
"Alexis, don't lie," Mikkos scolded. "I'll spank you if you lie."
"I know."
"You were always naughty. That's why I never loved you. Because you were naughty."
"No one says naughty anymore, father."
"Hush, your mother is going to sing."
Kristina was the flower girl. Katherine Bell and Chloe Morgan were bridesmaids. Her sister, Kristina, was her maid of honor.
Her sister was covered in blood, her leg was badly broken so she had to hop down the aisle. One of her eyes had fallen out. The blood clashed with the dress. She looked bad, but Alexis couldn't be rude and ask her not to be in the wedding.
She was her sister, after all, and it was her fault she was dead.
"Daddy, Alexis killed me," Kristina whined.
"I know, I'll spank her later but, quiet now so your mother can sing."
Kristen was standing in the middle of the stage in front of Lorenzo. She was wearing a beautiful blue dress and both sapphire necklaces.
Helena walked across the stage, slit her throat and pulled out her vocal cords. The vocal cords were very beautiful. They looked like thread spun from real gold.
Helena strung them through a giant gold harp and began to play the harp, but the music was Kristen singing.
"She was always so gifted." Mikkos walked his daughter down the aisle toward the stage.
Alexis didn't know if he meant her mother or Helena.
Both, maybe?
Katherine turned around suddenly. "You better hurry. The chandelier falls at the end and he'll get away."
"It's not the chandelier, that chandelier was there when I moved in," Alexis insisted.
"You're a liar, Mommy. You used it to trap him. Can I use it to trap a murderer for me when I grow up?"
"Yes, baby."
Mikkos kissed her cheek and disappeared.
Elton was the priest. He was going to marry them even though he hated Alexis. She was very grateful.
"The rings?"
Lorenzo pulled out his ring for her. Alexis looked around, she didn't know who had the other ring.
Stavros was Lorenzo's best man. He pulled something out of his pocket and handed it to Alexis.
She opened her hand and Lorenzo looked at it.
"That's a poker chip. I can't marry you with a poker chip." Lorenzo shook his head.
"I'll be right back," she told him.
She wandered off stage and looked around for a long time. She was worried the chandelier would fall before she got back and he'd get away.
"Jax? Jax? I need my ring."
She pushed a curtain back and there was Jax in bed with Courtney, only they were perfectly still. They looked like mannequins. They didn't speak, but Alexis could hear Jax's voice like it was pre-recorded.
"You've reached the bedroom of Jasper Jacks. I'm away from my friends right now or having sex with my beautiful fiance. Please leave a message after the beep and I'll get back to you when I feel like being your best friend again. Beeeeeep."
Alexis didn't want to leave a message and the glare from their white teeth was blinding her.
She reached out and touched his foot, but it was plastic. He was made of plastic now. That made her sad. Made her sadder than Sonny being dead.
Jax was plastic.
Where was she going to get a ring now?
She hurried back on stage. The chandelier was rocking. It was her mother's voice that made the chandelier rock like that. It was going to fall.
But she didn't want to tell her mother to stop singing, that would be rude.
"I don't have a ring."
"We don't need a ring. We'll do it without the ring." He held out his hands to her. "But hurry, Alexis. We have to get married now. The police found the bodies in the driveway."
"Wong was supposed to clean them up."
"You can't trust Wong."
Alexis took his hands. "You shaved off your beard."
"I did it for the pictures."
"But I liked the beard."
"You'll like this, too."
"Take her hand. Repeat after me." Elton cleared his throat. "I, Luis Alcazar.."
"I, Luis Alcazar.."
Alexis tried to pull away, but Luis held onto her hands tightly.
"No, no. I'm supposed to marry Lorenzo!"
Luis smiled at her. "You're such a murderer, Alexis. Lorenzo said he could never love you because you're a murderer."
Her eyes fluttered open. No big dramatic scream. No clutching of her chest. No panic attack.
Just a little nightmare for her. Nothing too startling.
Certainly not as terrifying as real life at the moment.
Staring up into piercing blue eyes that made her blood run cold.
